Translation: A Canadian cyclist “following” the Giro d’Italia.
From Canada to follow the Giro d’Italia. Lawrence Silcox, age 31 from Vancouver, has decided to follow the Giro on his own two wheels in the wake of Fausto Coppi. Lawrence has just traveled Saturday’s stage from Morbegno to Bergamo. Sunday he left on the next stage to Milan, after a quick breakfast with Chiara and Clara in Ambivere, where he had spent the night with his new friends from the Internet.
In fact, for sleeping, Lawrence relies on “Couchsurfing” a website program through which a network of hospitality exists for travelers worldwide. Those who have space for a guest to sleep in their house can provide it for free to travelers. It is a low cost way to travel, yes, but it’s also an excellent way to immerse oneself in the local culture.
Lawrence decided to complete this tour primarily on bike, but had some some short sections on the train. “The Giro d’Italia is a race I have always admired” says Lawrence. “However, my ride does not only visit Italy, but also explores many other countries including France, Switzerland, Austria and Spain. I began on the 4th of May in Strasbourg, continued into Switzerland and onto Venice. From there, to Jesolo, Trieste, Grado, Valdobbiadene, Bolzano and Bressanone. Then to Mayrhofen and Innsbruck in Austria and back into Italy through Chiavenna, Morbegno and on here to Bergamo. In total, the bike riding is about 3000kms in just 20 days.” [ed. note: I continued onto do the Milan-San Remo on May 19th and finished my ride on the 22nd in Barcelona. You can read about the entire tour here on the blog]
Lawrence, who has a consultancy for sustainable energy companies, had recently started a new business manufacturing clothing for urban cyclists. These clothes are strictly eco-friendly products, focusing on sustainable manufacturing and the activity is called, coincidentally, Cima Coppi.

What customers are saying about Cima Coppi…
“I do not believe that I gave you a proper thank you for the great work you did for me on these two jerseys. I am entirely impressed with both. The green one is absolutely bomb proof. I’ve been freeriding in it all fall and winter. Again, BRAVO.”
-Daniel, Norway.
“Just wanted to let you know that I love the jersey that I got for my birthday yesterday. It’s beautiful, fits perfect and I’m super proud to wear it. I love the arm warmers I have that you made, and I really like what you are doing. I look forward to getting more of your product. Cheers.”
-Tom, Vancouver.
“I cannot thank you enough for the excellent crafted bag & hat. I have to say that you do make quality select pieces. The cut of the bag is proper size for optimal goods transport. Aside from it being a kick ass stylish bag, the arm strap was also well put together. Has to be the first courier bag that I’ve own that got it right! The comfort is key. My Gundam bag has become the everyday bag on and off the bike, my all time fav. The hat is also a perfect fit for my big ass head…love it. Here’s hoping that you make more and I will be the first to invest in another. Thank You.”
-Wesley, Toronto.
“This is a beautifully tailored hat, far finer than the normal four panel cycling cap I’ve been wearing. I was looking for a cheaper alternative to the pricey [competitor] caps and I think this is just as good.”
-David, New York.
“I’ve been biking around with your [Gundam] bag and it carries my laptop and groceries amazingly well. The weight is distributed evenly and the two strap combination helps keep the bag from sliding. Functional and aesthetically pleasing…c’est cool.
-Emily, Austin.
“I really appreciate the service and love your products. Many thanks,”
-Jamil, Portland.
“Thanks, I really appreciate what you guys at Cima Coppi are doing. Keep it up! Best regards.”
-Alex, Stockholm.
